To copy signals 24/7, MetaTrader has to be running somewhere that never sleeps. The two options are a forex VPS (a rented Windows server you run MT4/MT5 on) or cloud execution (we run it for you). Here's how they compare.
The core difference
- VPS — you rent a server, install MetaTrader and the EA, and maintain it. You're the sysadmin.
- Cloud execution — your selected provider hosts the broker connection. With MetaTrader API 2.0, you attach an existing provider seat using its account UUID and trading key.
Cost
- VPS: typically $10–$40/mo on top of your copier subscription, billed separately.
- Cloud: TradeJournal Pro Cloud Starter is $39/month billed monthly, or $372/year paid upfront, and has no separate VPS bill. Execution-provider fees are additional. MetaTrader API 2.0, the default new-account option, charges per connected-account seat; you attach an existing seat using its UUID and trading key. MetaApi remains a separate pay-as-you-go option. Setup & maintenance
- VPS: install Windows updates, keep MetaTrader logged in, restart after reboots, fix it when it disconnects. Ongoing chores.
- Cloud: no local trading terminal to maintain, but you must keep provider access active and verify the broker connection. The new MetaTrader API REST connector is beta: test entries, targets and management on demo first. It does not enable streaming or hidden/virtual SL/TP.
Uptime
- VPS: as reliable as the provider and your config. A missed Windows reboot can take you offline silently.
- Cloud: provider-hosted and monitored so your own PC can stay off; execution still depends on service, provider, broker, and market availability.
Speed
Both can be fast. What matters is proximity to the broker and clean delivery. Cloud execution places orders in well under a second; a good VPS near your broker's servers is comparable.
Control
- VPS: full control — install other tools, multiple terminals, custom EAs.
- Cloud: streamlined for copying; less to tinker with (which is the point).
Which should you choose?
- Already comfortable managing a VPS, or want full local control? VPS + the EA line (Starter $25/month billed monthly, or $240/year paid upfront).
- Want provider-hosted execution without maintaining a Windows VPS? Cloud execution.
